Our Heart Care services use the latest technologies and techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart diseases and arrhythmias. Interventional cardiologists are cardiologists with additional training in catheter-based procedures. Many heart conditions that once required open-heart surgery can now be treated through a small puncture in an artery in the wrist or groin, which often means a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.
Know the Warning Signs
Don’t ignore symptoms that could signal heart disease. Contact a cardiologist promptly if you notice any of these warning signs, even if they come and go.
Pain, pressure or tightness in the chest, jaw or between the shoulder blades, especially with exertion.
Breathlessness with light activity, when lying flat or during the night.
Lightheadedness or passing out can signal a heart rhythm or heart valve problem.
A racing, pounding, fluttering or irregular heartbeat.
Unusual tiredness, lower exercise tolerance or new confusion can accompany reduced heart function.
Arm or leg weakness, numbness or pain, slurred speech, or unexplained sweating needs prompt medical attention.
Call 911 for chest pain lasting more than a few minutes, fainting, sudden severe shortness of breath, or stroke signs such as face drooping, slurred speech or sudden arm or leg weakness.

Diagnosis
State-of-the-art imaging and assessment techniques help our interventional cardiologists precisely diagnose coronary artery disease, structural heart defects and other cardiovascular conditions. Many tests are available at our Cypress offices and imaging center.
An EKG records the heart’s electrical activity; Holter and event monitors record your rhythm during daily life.
Ultrasound imaging shows the heart’s pumping strength and valves. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) gives close-up valve views.
Treadmill and nuclear stress tests show how the heart and its blood supply respond to exertion.
PET imaging uses a tracer to show blood flow and distinguish healthy heart muscle from damaged muscle.
A CT scan with contrast dye that creates detailed images of the coronary arteries and plaque.
Catheter-based imaging shows exactly where arteries are narrowed; fractional flow reserve, intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography measure blockages in detail.

An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with additional training in catheter-based procedures. Besides diagnosing and managing heart disease, interventional cardiologists perform cardiac catheterization, angioplasty and stenting, and structural heart procedures such as TAVR through small punctures instead of open surgery.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease. It occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed by plaque. Learn more on our coronary artery disease page.
Symptoms can include chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, pain in the arm, back, neck or jaw, nausea, cold sweats and lightheadedness. Women are more likely to have symptoms other than chest pain. Call 911 right away if you think you are having a heart attack.
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) replaces a narrowed aortic valve using a catheter, usually inserted through an artery in the groin, instead of open-heart surgery. It is used for selected patients with severe aortic stenosis after a full heart evaluation.
